ANC Statement on the Northern Cape Matric Results of 2018

The African National Congress in the Northern Cape has noted the matric results for the year 2018, we reaffirm that education remains an apex priority for the African National Congress and the ANC-led government. It is our firm belief that education is the key to seeing that everyone has an equal opportunity to improve the welfare of their families and the community at large. It is for these reasons that as the ANC we are extremely dissapointed in the percentage drop. It is particularly concerning for the ANC that there seems to be no improvement in our matric results both quantitatively and qualitatively. The Provincial Officials of the ANC will soon meet with the leadership at the department in an effort to analyse the results and agree on a way forward.

Education remains a societal issue and the responsibility of each and every stakeholder, and we would therefore like to urge parents and the society to play a more active role in the education of our children. The matric results are an indication that more needs to be done and we need to look at interventions aimed at constantly improving our education system.

We congratulate the learners and the different stakeholders in the John Taolo Gaetsewe Region for the commitment and hardwork put in to ensure that the district moves from position number five to position number two, this is evident that together we are able to do more. Once again, the Namakwa region has done us proud, they are the best performing region in the province and have also managed to increase their results to 83.7% this is a clear indication that as a province we are able to reclaim our number One position. The ANC would also like to applaud the teachers for the dedication that they demonstrated throughout the year, this would not be possible without their commitment.

To those matriculants who did not make it, we urge them not to give up, re-register and write your matric, education is after all the only weapon that can change the world. Remember that failure is not a definer of who you are or where you will end up in life, it is only when you stop, when you give up that you shall have a determined outcome in life, perseverance builds character. Congratulations to the class of 2018.
