Cde Fufe Makatong Hosts Women in Health Dialogue

The Women In Health Dialogue was held under a theme, “Health – focusing on leadership and service with integrity and dignity”. The theme is drawn from the life and legacy of Mama Albertina Sisulu and in line with this month’s theme, “100 Years of Albertina Sisulu, Woman of Fortitude: Women United in Moving South Africa Forward."

Northern Cape MEC for Health, Ms Fufe Makatong hosted the 2018 provincial women in health dialogue on the 31st August 2018 at Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre in Kimberley. The event was graced by a 1000 women in our department as well as few high profile ambassadors in the entertainment industry and extensively engaged on issues affecting women in general.

 

The dialogue also focused on the importance of women’s unity, mobilization and organization to advance their rights, critical gender issues facing women today, economic empowerment, including more recent examples such as the significant advances made in women’s health, - including lower maternal mortality rates, breast and surgical cancer and implementing the largest antiretroviral (ARV) programme, as it has contributed to a reduction in mother to child transmission of HIV and a significant decline in Aids-related

 

The department used the platform to launch the 120 Equality Terms Toolkit. The toolkit is intended to assist managers in understanding issues of equality and mainstreaming, using the correct words in a human rights context when addressing issues of difference, this is the first of its kind in the country. Women in the department also elaborated on the draft policy” Dignity at work” which outlaws all forms of workplace violence and the corporate culture “Servant-heart”, was also be discussed in our endeavour to bring back the culture of caring and servanthood into health.

 

Sexual harassment was high on the agenda as the department has an appointed person dealing with sexual harassment in the workplace. The women will also reflect on the recently appointed forums in the department, the women forums, men’s forum, moral regeneration forum, disability forum and the employment equity forum, which responsibility will be to get the 50% target women appointment on senior management level, and 2% persons with disability appointed across all occupational categories in the department.
